Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Villains

Another week, another Top Ten Tuesday, a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. The topic today is all about the villains. I chose to list some of my favorite villains because they give books life! These are characters I love to hate. I know I’m missing a lot of villains, but these were just the first ones that popped into my head when I read the topic for the week. Let’s check them out.

1. DOLORES UMBRIDGE

When I read Harry Potter, I obviously wanted him to win and be the hero, but I never hated Voldemort. But I did hate Umbridge, with a passion. The description of her office made me nauseous and her punishments to Harry were so sickening. There’s something about a villain with a sweet facade that makes them even worse than serious moody ones, you know?

 

 

 

2. KRONOS

The all powerful Titan. A seemingly invincible villain is always great. The stakes are high and the possibilities of winning low. It makes every action the characters make matter and that keeps me at the edge of my seat whilst reading, which I love.

 

 

 

 

3. THE DEMONS

These demons were a looming evil. We never know exactly how powerful they are or their exact plans, so we can just feel them constantly lurking around the corner. What I loved the most about these demons as villains was how abstract they were. I didn’t know what to expect from them, but they were a threat nonetheless.

 

4. THE OTHER MOTHER

Coraline is such a unique book. Disturbing, magical, funny, and witty. I was so unsettled when I watched the film. I couldn’t believe how scary it was! Then I read the novel and it was just as creepy. The other mother was the perfect villain. Like Umbridge, she was sweet and calculating, growing more dangerous by the minute.

 

 

 

 

5. THE GRANDMOTHER

I can’t remember her name, but she was terrifying! She was manipulative and abusive. She controlled everyone with fear and always brought religion and sin into the conversation. She is one of those characters so purely evil that her presence lingers with you even after you’ve finished the novel.

 

 

 

 

6. BIG BROTHER

More of a symbol than a character, big brother is part of a future we all fear: an omnipresent dictator that controls our every move. The last words of 1984 still haunt me.

7. JOE

Joe, the witty main character of this novel is a stalker. He does horrible things. He is definitely a terrible person and a villain. Still… what an amazing character! This book was great and it was all mainly because of how Joe is portrayed.

  1. I added The Circle to my TBR. Looks really good!

    Dolores Umbridge is pretty much the perfect villain. Now, this next bit’s addressing the *movie* Umbridge, who wasn’t nearly as ugly as the book one. .. I think it’s interesting that we tend to portray evil as looking evil/hideous, when in reality evil tends to either look crazy or disturbingly normal. Movie Umbridge, with her makeup, perfectly coiffed hair, pink suits, etc, broke all those molds, which made her utter vileness even more shocking, I think.

    1. Yeah! I love villains that don’t particularly stand out with an “evil look”, but rather with their actions, what they say, etc.
      The Circle was okay, but the rest of the trilogy was amazing! Well, that is if you enjoy long books with a lot of character exploration. I’m glad you added it 🙂

    2. I definitely recommend it – I first watched the movie on a movie marathon (they played the following movies as well and I was hooked!). I definitely think the first is the best one. Glad to see the grandmother up there because boy is she gnarly. Definitely read up.

  5. Dolores Umbridge will make a lot of list today 😉 i totaly forgot about Big Brother – it was an annoying and evil part of the strry. I haven’t read any other book from your list, but I’ll keep that list in mind when I want to read some book with a fascinating evil character.

  8. The Grandmother’s name in flowers in the attic was Olivia, but in the first book she was just the evil Grandmother. The 5th book in the series was a prequel about her. It was pretty interesting.

    1. Oh, nice to know, thanks! I just read the first two books of the series and only liked the first one, so that might be why I couldn’t remember her name. In Flowers in the Attic she was pure evil, but I’m guessing that in that prequel book we get to know how she got to be like that and see some redeeming qualities, which does sound pretty interesting!

      1. That is exactly what it was about, haha. You see how she was as a child and what led to her becoming so angry and vindictive, because that’s really what motivated her actions. (Though I actually loved that entire series when I was younger.)

  11. I agree. Umbridge is another kind of evil. I didn’t mind reading the books when Voldemort was in the scene, but when Umbridge was, I wanted to chuck the book across the room and pull my hair out. Same goes for Bellatrix. I had a hard time finding anything I liked about her. haha

  12. I don’t think any villain list is complete without Umbridge! The only other books on the list that I have read are The Lightning Thief and 1984, and 1984 is so creepy! I’ve heard of Coraline and You by Caroline Kepnes, although I haven’t read them.
