Book Traveling Thursdays: A Book that Focuses on Food

Every week, Danielle (from Danielle’s Book Blog) and Cátia (from TheGirlWhoReadTooMuch) host a feature called Book Traveling Thursdays on Goodreads. They give you a topic each Thursday and you choose a book that you think fits. Then comes the fun part: a cover showdown! You post the original cover, the cover from your country (which I won’t be doing because the books aren’t published here), and then your favorite and least favorite cover from any edition around the world.

This week’s topic is a book that focuses on food, eating, or cooking. I LOVE when food is mentioned in books and it plays a part in it. I decided to go with Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel because Tita’s cooking is very important for the plot. Magical realism plays a part in it, as Tita’s feelings and what she mixes into the recipes affect the food as well as the people who eat it. Also, the book actually includes the recipes she uses, which I thought was a nice addition. Now, let’s check out the covers!

This is the 1992 Mexican cover. Although I don’t love the layout, I think the overall look works great  for the novel. I think the illustration is really nice! I noticed a lot of editions kept it.

This is the cover I had. I never thought much of it. It focuses on sensuality, which is an important theme of the novel. When I had it I liked muted colors and its simplicity.

The left cover is from Poland and the right one if from Lithuania. I’m in love with the colors of the Polish cover. It’s so vibrant and it doesn’t show the complete face of the model (which is always a plus for me in book covers). The Lithuanian one is also gorgeous and quite different. I adore that both covers focus on the mortar and rose petals Tita uses for the most important recipe of the novel.

The left cover is from Thailand and the illustration actually represents parts of the novel, but I don’t think that it does in the best way possible. It’s a bit too abstract and creepy. The one from the right is the German cover, which is just plain lazy design.

    1. I didn’t like it when I read it for some weird reason, but as time went by, I sort of kept thinking about it and how brilliant some things were. I’m a magical realism fan, so in the end the book won me over! I would definitely recommend it if you enjoy that genre and dramatic romance.

  10. Okay I just read this book this year and I loved it. I like the original Mexican cover, but after reading your post I definitely think that the Poland and Lithuanian versions are gorgeous. Especially how the Lithuanian one decides to focus on rose petals and mortar cup which is so important to the novel. Here’s my BTT

  11. Ooohh, I read this book YEARS ago (with the Mexican cover too!) but remember really enjoying it (and feeling hungry). Never would have thought to look for other covers – the Lithuanian and Polish ones are stunning! So glad I found this post – it’s absolutely lovely. 🙂
