Top Ten Tuesday: Things books have made me want to learn or do

Another week, another Top Ten Tuesday, a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. This time the theme is things books have made me want to learn or do. Whether it’s visiting a place or learn a cool ability, books are always showcasing awesome things I want to know how to do or simple learn more about them, so let’s check them out!

1. Talk many languages

When I read Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer, I fell in love with the ability Artemis had to talk and translate a bunch of different languages. By that time, I was already learning English in school and loving it, but I think reading about that ability really accentuated my love for languages. In the following years I tried learning Italian by myself, I listened to music in all kinds of languages, I saw French in high school and then went on to study Modern Languages in university, where I learned a bit of German. Now I run this blog entirely in English and I’m constantly listening to music from Bollywood films in Hindi, adding to my collection of international music. Although I don’t speak nor understand most of the languages, they are still present in my life in a lovely way.

2. Travel

I think we all share this one. Books allow us to visit places through the pages, but we end up wanting to see the real deal! I wish I could be momentarily transported to some of the locations I’ve read to see how incredible they are.

3. Learn to use bow and arrow

One word: Katniss. Honestly, when I read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins all I wanted to do was learn how to use bow and arrow. It seems so cool. Maybe one day?

4. Cook

When I read a book and a character is eating something, I want it. I can’t help it. It makes me hungry. And when a book is set in another country and it mentions typical recipes from that place, I instantly search them to see if they’re vegetarian and I can make them. On my to do list there’s now jollof rice and chin chin from Nigeria thanks to Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor.

5. Read about history

Many books mention or are set in specific periods in time that I don’t know much (or anything) about, so they motivate me to Google all about them and learn a bit of history. This is always a plus for me!

6. Be a movie set designer

Everything Leads to You by Nina LaCour features Emi, a girl who designs film sets, and after reading all that went behind that job enchanted me. It’s not something I will ever realistically do, but I would love too at least see the behind-the-scenes of one set design one day!

    1. I would love to travel AND get to eat the food there, but realistically only cooking it myself is possible 😛 Nothing beats the original though, I would love to try the authentic thing at one point.

  6. I’ve never read Artemis Fowl, but I do think it would be SO incredible to be able to speak and understand a bunch of different languages. Language fascinates me, but it’s definitely hard to become fluent in a language. I’m going on my third year of German and I’m still such a beginner!

    Ooh, I’ve never read a book about a set designer. I’ve never even really thought about set designers before. Now I’m SUPER curious!

    1. Tell me about it. My main problems are prepositions (I never remember which one is appropriate) and learning which words are feminin, maskulin and neutral, because they’re usually different from what Spanish words are -.-
      Set design is sooo interesting. We never think about it much seeing a film, but everything has been placed in a set with an intention, with a thought behind it. Everything leads to you has a beautiful way of explaining the whole thing, plus it’s a fluffy cute book, easy to read 😉

  7. I’m always on again off again with my desire to learn archery (my upper body strength is mostly crap XD) ever since I got into Robin Hood, but I think Pixar’s Brave and THG certainly renewed my interest, because yessss kickass girl archers!

  10. This is such a great list! There’s so many languages I want to learn, but I just always end up getting too distracted 😂 I used to be fluent in Indonesian whilst I was at school, but I only remember the basics now. Then I tried teaching myself Spanish on Duolingo, but that didn’t exactly work out either, hahaha. Learning to use a bow and arrow would be so cool too. Oh and travelling of course. I have a serious case of wanderlust.
