Every week, Danielle (from Danielle’s Book Blog) and Cátia (from TheGirlWhoReadTooMuch) host a feature called Book Traveling Thursdays on Goodreads. They give you a topic each Thursday and you choose a book that you think fits. Then comes the fun part: a cover showdown! You post the original cover, the cover from your country (which I won’t be doing because the books aren’t published here), and then your favorite and least favorite cover from any edition around the world.
This week’s topic is a book with an eye candy cover, that is, a book that I read or bought because of its cover. For this I have to go with The River of No Return by Bee Ridgway, although I also picked it for the plot. I mean, time travel! An entity that controls it! I was sold instantly. In the middle of reading it, I realized it was the first of a series (it’s not known if it’s a duology, trilogy or what). The second has not come out yet and I am becoming impatient. But let’s forget about that for the moment and check some covers out!
ORIGINAL COVER
This is the original US cover. Look at that. It’s SO beautiful. The font, the colors, the illustration – it’s all stunning. And the title is also one of my favorite titles ever.
FAVORITE COVERS
Well, clearly the original cover was bound to be my favorite if I picked the book because of it, but I had to add another one which I believe it’s also from the US. I really like the concept and I love that it plays with separating the difference between settings and the main characters. My only complaint about it is the colors, I wish they were different so the differences would pop out more. Still, I love both these covers very much.
LEAST FAVORITE COVERS
On the left we have the Italian edition and on the right the one from Spain. Let’s start with Spain. It’s the exact same concept, it’s still beautiful, but WHY change the color!? I hate that they changed it to red and browns. The teal/blueish color of the original is supposed to be evocative water and the river, which is an incredibly important symbol throughout the novel. Let’s move on to the Italian cover. It’s not hideous, but overall, it doesn’t look cohesive. The purple behind the title is too harsh and, although the illustrations are not bad, it bothers me that the face of the man is so concealed. There was enough space to play around, but they chose to put everything in a corner!
That cover is stunning 😍 It’s so aesthetically pleasing. The layout and the font and the illustrations. I love it!!! The red in the Spain version just looks really out of place. I really don’t understand the marketing behind some cover changes, I mean I’m sure there’s a reason but…. haha. I hadn’t heard of this book before and it’s not one I’d normally read but it does sound interesting and I am trying to read outside my comfort zone so I added it to my TBR!!

I guess it depends on what editorial picks up the book and the cover copyright thing internationally, but really, their decisions are a mystery to us all haha. I’m glad you added it! 😀 It’s got a bit of romance, but I wouldn’t say it’s a love story, it’s more about time travel than anything else (which I LOVE).

Nope, I don’t know this book. But the original US cover really is beautiful. I can see why you bought it for its cover (:
If I did Book Traveling Thursdays, I would have chosen Illuminae because… I mean, just look at this cover: https://www.goodreads.com/book/photo/23395680-illuminae I find it as mind blowing as the book itself.

It’s stunning! I’ve heard the hardback edition is gorgeous because of the see-through dust jacket. I wish I could own it one day *.*

I have not read this one, but it sure does look amazing. Personally, I don’t like the red one too. The blue looks nice and cute.

It show how much a color scheme does for a cover, incredible isn’t it? The red seems so harsh in comparison to the blue.

Yes, it does. Who would’ve thought changing the colour would make it like that?

😀 Yess, I’m luring people into reading this so we can all wait impatiently for the sequel. It’s my master plan haha

I haven’t read this book, but I agree with you and your choices. I prefer the blue one, also. And Italian one is just looks a little bit like catastrophe, hehe.
I love how layout your post! 🙂

Thank you, I’m glad you enjoy the layout ❤ Yes, the Italian is messy! I like that word to describe it, catastrophe haha

I’m shocked no one has heard of this book, I thought it was a hyped one because I saw it all the time a few years back, but I guess it was just me being lured by the cover hahaha

I’ve seen this book in Sam @ a Thoughts on Tomes’ shelves and you’re right, it’s super gorgeous! I don’t really mind the Spanish version though, the Reds and Browns aren’t that bad haha

You’re right! She has it there, I noticed once watching some videos. Very observant of you!
I get it, it’s not actually ugly or anything, but after seeing the blue and the river thing I mentioned, every single time I looked at it it clashed with my eyes 😛

I always see this cover around and it really is so beautiful! I don’t think I’ve ever even read the synopsis though – I have no idea why

That happens to me with many books! I still don’t know what A Court of Thorns and Roses is about, even with all the hype surrounding it. I even read some reviews, but never read the synopsis haha

I have this one on my tbr – and I hadn’t seen the second US cover with the circles before. Now that I see it, though, I actually prefer it! 🙂

Totally get it. It’s more fitting to the themes. But I can’t help to love the original’s colors ❤
